1. On Sunday I got dragged out to a small fairytale-like village called Fischerhüde by one of the older teachers at my school, who wanted to show me her house.  I agreed to go because if there’s one thing I’ve learned about living in Germany, if you are invited somewhere by someone over the age of 40, lots of cake and coffee is usually involved.
In addition to the cake and coffee, we went to a secondhand fashion show, whose proceeds were to go to children in Tibet.  The teacher and I found this coat, and once I had tried it on, she insisted on buying it for me.  It’s suede and lined with real fur, and I’ve been wearing it around my apartment and pretending to be Grace Kelly :)

  2. My sweet new Bremen digs

Here are some photos of my new apartment in the “hip” part of town called Ostertorviertel, or just “Viertel”.  I made sure to wait for a day when the sun decided to make an appearance.  It’s actually the top floor of an 150-year-old Altbremerhaus (old Bremen house), and a married couple live in the rest of the house below me.  The area has tons of great cafes, cheap Turkish food places, bars, and music stores, and is a 20 minute walk from the city center.  Love it so far!

  8. Peanut butter = the answer to everything.

I came home today in a terrible mood.  The sky was cloudy as usual, and the last class I taught was filled with 25 rowdy teenagers whom I could not get under control.  I was hungry, but tired of my usual bread and cheese lunches.  In my despair, I dragged myself to the store and picked up a jar of peanut butter (which my host mother thinks is gross) came home and made myself a big ol’ PB & J.  It was like someone switched on a light, and the world was a decent place again. Amazing! If there was any doubt that this girl is 100% Ami…

  10. A picture I took of the Kölner Dom (the Cologne Cathedral) about a day after I landed in Germany for my Fulbright orientation in Cologne.  This ancient thing really looks like it came from outer space and just decided to plop down next to the Hauptbahnhof.  Pretty hard to miss!  I climbed to the top of it which was exhausting.
